The Williams Helical Camshaft is what car enthusiasts and auto engineers alike have been waiting for many years. It is something that most people had given up hope of ever seeing.
The Williams Helical Camshaft is a truly practical, useable and capable mechanical variable duration camshaft. The Williams Helical Cam essentially replaces the camshaft in a conventional cylinder head, operating with conventional followers.
It offers a vast stepless duration range, from that of an average road engine to more valve opening duration than a Formula 1 engine could use.
The duration range is so wide that it can be used to control the power output of an engine without using a throttle plate. This gives dramatic reductions in fuel use at idle and part engine load.
In its ultimate form, the Williams Helical Camshaft can give a conventional car engine better than F1 performance with fuel economy rivalling that of a diesel.
These seemingly outlandish claims are backed by sound, conventional automotive engineering theory. Given that a suitable variable duration arrangement does exist, there are few engineers who would disagree with these claims.
Until the advent of the Williams Helical Camshaft, in the long history of the internal combustion engine there has never been a mechanical system of genuine wide-range, stepless variable duration where all the added duration is at full valve lift.
